          “Pro – Contra Using Block System in Fashion & Textile Merchandising”

            Block system is study method in practicum lesson with using hectic schedule. The practice lesson that use this system are sewing, cutting, pattern design/CAD, and choosing garment machine practice. This system is used for cretaed the condition of study like work condition in industry. With a hectic schedule and with a short time deadline, its make the condition of study become aggressive because the large number of products are produced must accordance with deadline time.

            Using this system was recently used on last year. In my opinion This system created because there is demand from garment industry for student to common with the real work in garment industry. 

            For this two years, the system create a negative thing and positive thing, especially the interesting to discussed is about students ability in remembering the practice lessons with using this system. Appeared two opinions about block system, the first opinion is use this system will make students are easy to forget the practice lessons and the second opnion is that block system will make students are easy to remember the practice lessons. I think these opinions created because the problem of schedule time, as we know this system is using time study every day per one practice lesson, untill finish and it makes schedule of lesson quickly finish. This conditon make students are not want to learn again about same lesson for a long time. So this make students were easy to forgot about the lesson that was have gave to them. In other side this condition make students more easy remembering about the practice lesson because with hectic schedule students will do the same practice in every day, so i think its make student more easy to remember the practicum lessons.

I think the problems that created by this system  is from the input who works it. Actualy the study method that using block system has a very good effects for how work students in industry later.

What Happened With Block System?

Block system is the system used in the lab at the Polytechnic STT Textile, majoring in Fashion & Textile Merchandising. Practicum that use the block system is manual and CAD patterns, cutting, garment machinery elections, and sewing.

This block system teaches us what it was like to work in industry, for example in the sewing lab within fourteen meetings we should be able to complete fifty seven chemical lab coats, and we are required to produce great results without the slightest flaw. Although this system is actually very good because students are taught to become familiar with the activities in the industrialized world, but the system have a lot of disadvanteges.

I think the disadvantages of the block system is, the first to make the students become bored and tired, why? because in fourteen meetings we are required to do the same thing. Secondly, we are required to produce the seam nice, neat and without disabilities in the slightest because there are many students who are not adept at sewing often we have to dismantle or 'mendedel' seam defects and less neat it is really a huge waste of time. The third, sometimes between Lecturers one with lecturers another thing and the one found to be doing a-b-c-d while the other was found to be doing d-c-b-a and it really makes students confused. Those are all my opinion about the disadvantages of block system.

While the advantages of the blocks system are in addition to train students to become familiar with the industry, the block system also train students to become more proficient in the field of sewing, pattern making either manually or CAD, cut the fabric neatly and determine the machines to be used.

Do You Dare to Study with The Block System Schedule?

Fashion and Textile Merchandising is the one and only major in Polytechnic STTT which applies block system schedule for the practicum. The block system schedule organizes the day into fewer, but longer for time of study in a day. Actually, the block system schedule is to make student easier to understand about the lesson because they have to concentrate to the one subject every day for fourteen meetings and it makes student easy to remember the lesson of the subject because they will review the previous lesson on next day. But, sometimes student feels bored with the lesson and they can’t explore their mind because they just have one night to think what should they do next day, and sometimes  lecturer has to tell them about what should they do and what will they learn in the class for fourteen meetings later on the block system schedule. It makes student feels like a factory worker especially for student who just be quiet after the lecturer explain the lesson and give an exercises in the class after that the student go home and do nothing at home because they only can do their exercises in college, although they haven’t finish it at that day. For student who not critics and active will not get a sense of the goal of the block system schedule because they just follow the rules without ask anything about the goal of this system, which the goal is improved student academic performances and to adapt before they work in the real industry.

In Block system schedule, student should be present in every meetings, if the student is absent from a block schedule class they will miss so much lesson, although they can join to other group but it is so difficult to match the schedule. After student completed the one subject, they also have to study other subject with block system schedule. The other subject applies system for study is same with the previous subject such as; student has to focus about the subject in fourteen meetings, they will review the previous lesson on next day, etc. When student focus to the one subject, they almost never review the previous subject and they will forget it slowly. So, the block system schedule has some advantages and disadvantages for example; the block system schedule makes student easy to remember the lesson but it also makes student easy to forget the lesson. It depends on how they organize their time to review the subject not only on the block system schedule.

Study With Using Block System Happy and Sad

Block system is daily schedule practice, that in a one block need time two weeks or fourteen meeting, it’s consist thirteen meeting practice, and one meeting examination. This system create  learn that enough need a long time in every days. If counded one block with total time 300 minutes perday. One semester there are four block, and usually it’s enough need time three months, the avverage for one block It’s only take two weeks because in this we forced to finished in short time

            Like what i feel this system is drain much energy, everyday return to home at afternoon, less study for other lessons,  and we forced like a worker. With using this system, the our benefit is quickly complete courses untill we can relax after finish this block. With this system we more understand the course, because the course are repeat everyday in wo weeks. Because of that appeared some responses from my friends, whether this system lesson that have conveyed will easy to remember or forget to remember?

            In my opinion with this system our study model is easier to understand and easier to remember lesson that have conveyed by lecture. Why is that?, because we learned repeatly everyday in two weeks untill we can more understand. But if block system finished, we forgot the lesson. We easy to forget because we are not learn again, stress because too much think, and less rest. That’s make we forget lesson that have conveyed by lecture.

            Because of that in this system student required to study by self, active in study process untill sure understand the lesson. This system is heavy but just enjoy it, because it very exclamed and very happy.

Why these two things can happen ?

In major of fashion and textile merchandising , there are education system called  block system , how to learn on the system is being carried out in places such as simulated factory or called workshop garment, that's in there are work area ,  manual pattern and CAD pattern , the cutting fabric, and the sewing fabric into a product.

In my opinion, the holding of this system is interesting why? Because can train ourselves more discipline and also speed up the time the lab work. This time the block to be learned of the manual and a cad, a plan for garments production, sewing,  selection of the garment machine . Here we are trained to use time as efficiently as possible in achieving the target in the manufacture of products, required skills and concentration.

There are the difference thoughts in this system. There who think that this  system is very easy to forget and there are also think that this system is easy to remember. I think, why is it easy to remember because the process of learning and practice to do every day for 2 weeks, so what that has been studied will be very easy to remember because over and over again. And can also hone our ability to do something with their respective subjects such as the use of a sewing machine, how to operate a sewing machine, make a product, etc. Then why is a system block can be easy to forget ? Because you have to do it only two weeks. So after two weeks ,we are not study again , probably at the time of learning process there is less of understandable. But not all of them forget, there are only a few things such as installation of the thread on a sewing machine, operation of the cutting machine , measuring  size in the pattern.

Be remembered or forgotten

When I am studying in my college there are lots of thing that can make me happy and fun but at the same time busy and full of assignments but those are the steps to become success. In 2015, Polytechnic STTT Bandung make a new system, the system is called block system. Block system is a system for textile and fashion merchandising major only, other major is not using the system. The system was first implemented in this college in purpose to update the courses to a new level.

                There are advantages and disadvantages from this system for the college students. The advantages from this system is, for example college student can finished his study faster, the materials offered by lecturer will be easier to understand and easier to remember this is because college student are learning intensively for two weeks. College student will learn block system day by day to make it easier for the students to remember. On the other hand, there are disadvantages from this block system. For example, the student college are easier to remember the theory only at the moment but when the block system is over the things they just learn will disappear and they will forget about the theory. They will forget easier because when they are done studying theory X they must continue to theory Y for 2 weeks so that the theory x is easier to forget.

                There are advantages and disadvantages from the block system but as a smart college student we have to overcome it so that the good solution for the problem is study and exercise all of theory from the lecturer not only at the time the courses are held but also after the courses to not only remembered it but to understand it.

My "Block" is My Way

My name is Fitri Komarasari. I am studying at Politeknik STTT majoring in Fashion and Textile merchandising. In the process of studying, the major I'm in take implements a different system that other major d not  implement .used by other majors. What system is it?

Is it discussion? Sharing  system? Round club? Aaah, no no, it is not it.

 Hmm, is it studying in a big circle? Aa, no no. We are not studying in a kindergarten, right? The answer is block system. What does "Block System" mean?

Block system is a system of academic schedule which demands students to study a course for a long time. It is for about 5 until 8 hours in 1 until 2 weeks which must be completed continually  in a row.

Since this system takes much time everyday, then the consequency falls into the attendance of students in the classroom;  it must be 100%. If there are students who are not able to attend a class, then they must replace it on another day. The replacement becomes so important as 100% of attendance is a requirement for getting enrolled in final examination.

Besides the attendance issue and the rule as stated above, this system has some advantages and disadvantages. One of my friend gives an epithet to this system, that is "Easy come,easy go".

Easy comes? What does it mean?

It means that this system is easily remembered and understood. It is because this system is implemented everyday in a long enough period of time so the lecturers can explain more, and students can elaborate the materials more, especially on putting the materials into practice.

Easy goes? What does it mean?

It means that this system is easily forgotten because one course only lasts for one to two weeks before it is replaced by another course afterward. The exam is also held in the end of the session (meeting), so we tend to skip the course without any repetition or rehearsal.

Apart from its advantages and disadvantages, we must follow this system well according to the agreed procedure.We can't be able to resist this ongoing system.

Like an aphorism that said "Nothing perfefct in this world,because the pefection just belong to Allah".

8) Iffah Abidatul A’la (15030052)

Behind block system program

Block system program is a must for fashion and textile merchandising lesson. It can educated us how industry works in a real life start from how to make pattern, cut, and sew and also we can design manajerial planning production like making some process map production and it’s spesification.  Each block system lesson spends seven or fourteen days in garmen work shop at 8 am until 1pm or 1pm until 5 pm. Sometimes, it can refresh us from learning the other lessons in the class. It’s really fun way to understand how industry works even though it makes us exhausted with long duration and the other schedule everyday.

However this program makes the student understand and easily to forgotten at the same time. Why?

It’s easy to understand because we do not just memorize teory, but also can do practical work with the lesson which has already learned in the class. We are able to know the problem and solve it. Then, when we are graduate it’s all would not became strange for us and we can adapt easily with work activity.

But on the other hand, it can be easily forgotten. Because each kind of block system has a short time to finish, about seven or fourteen days continually . After one kind of block system lesson, we do the other practical work which has only a bit related with the old one. So, in my opinion this block system should be fixed in order to be more useful.

Let's study with block system

Collegian of polythecnic STTTBandung specifially for textile and fashion merchandising major have known about. So, what is meant by block system?.

Block system it's a program when collegian make do practice during the two week with a subject the same. After two week, a subject change by of subject the other with time the same. Block system it's divisible be two sesion that is morning and daylight. The system starting from 08.00 - 12.00 AM and latest from 13.00 - 17.00 PM. This is why collegian many beefing about block system because it's make they are tired.

The system is a made so as to collegian known well condition in garment industry specifically for time management. Because garment industry it's a big scale.production process maybe can very faster than garmen industry smalls scale. They are production process faster because them product must be deliver accord with time that have been a given.

Because we demant can straighten up time management. Sometime, the system can make we easy to be a remember when had lessoned during to the two week, a subject can so easy remeber but after two week finished and a subject change the other. Before a subject will suddenly forget because a new subject. But, a forget subject can helping with reading again. With method , a before subject the forget can make remember. But back to your self, if we diligent, it's can help. But if we not diligent, it's not helping.

Block system is confused

                In the begin of 2nd semester we are confused by the block system schedule , and we dont understand what is block system ?

Block system is daily schedule for each class that being 2 weeks sequent , the purpose of block system is to make collage study more condusive and convensional . But, in fact that system have a positive and negative impact for a collage student.

With the block system may be some students complain because it makes us to be enterprising and dilligent done on time so that we are familiar with the world of work in a garment factory.

However, the block system is only 2 weeks of each course in one semester, so that if we had to do it in two weeks will be quickly forgotten because in the first half we were only 14 times in a row every day, so that our expertise will be reduced because it is not accustomed again .

And this block system can be said to be an effective system and can make us more quickly memorize the steps the process because it is done every day, so we remember them more quickly because while applying.

 The system can be said of our block as operator while some lecturers are many who say that we are not going to be the operator so that's what we did the system that ultimately will not be used and that knowledge can you get in theory.

In one form of block scheduling, a single class will meet every day for a number of weeks, after which another class will take its place. The use of the block system on education have positive and negative effects, the way I feel after learning block system on campus. In college I studied a block system on certain subjects, such as practicum of dressmaking, practicum of pattern making, and practicum of garment machines election. The positive impact that I feel is that, I can learn the lessons consistently, quick lesson finished, and class schedules are more relaxed, after lesson that uses a block system has been finished. But behind the positive side use the block system there are many negative impacts, negative effects that I felt after learning by using a block system that is, get tired because not accustomed to learning by using this system, irregular schedules of study, quickly forgotten and use the block system is felt less efficient.

As the proverb says "something that is easily obtained would easily lost", as well as study, if we learn with haste and too fast, the knowledge gained, will be useful because it is easy to forget. Thus the block system is a system that teaches us quickly. But, in the end we will quickly forget what have learned.

  The Secret of Block System

     In Sttt polytechnic, at Fashion and textile merchandising , we applied the block system method in our practice lesson. Such as practice maling pattern  manual & CAD, practice cutting, practice sewing, and so on. There are some advantage and disadvantage of this system method. This system is done everyday that make the time of learning become so crowded   appropriate number of meetings in one grade. Like nowadays, the system is done in 14 meetings in one grade. Maybe it's only in mayor garment production who apllied that kind of system because it needs lot of time and there are enough facilities.Block system has advantages which are we can easy to remember what we have learned because we study it everyday, and we do it for some times until the target of the lesson were done. Besides, block system has also some disadvantages, one of them. If the lesson were done, we can easily forget it because we don't do it  anymore, because there is no more lesson like it in this semester.block system is also need lot of time, and energy to do which can make us exhausted and bored.block system done to shorten the learning time for one semester, it's usually only one meeting a week, if there is a block system every day of the week there is definitely learning.  So the conclution is the blok system not only have advantage but also disadvantge.For those of you who not in fashion and textile merchandising, may not feel the block system because of a practiceless including the time, place and facilities.

Practice makes us remember to forget

What is the popular subject fashion and textile merchandising? Yes, there is the practice of the sewing, the practice of the selection of the garment and practice planning production of garments. All the practice be done in a system block. What is it the block system? I think, a system of block the practice during 4 hours a day in a row. Well here we in particular the production of garments to make product with the target and time on set. This design room same as in the factory. The reason that we especially the department of fashion and textile merchandising familiar with situation in the factory. The function of a block system is the demands to regulate order by piece/hours.

Block system for me has positive and negative sides. In positive side, absolutely very useful because we can be more proficient in sewing, we can set up and think about how the target can be achieved in the appointed time, it's good to be producing products with work itself, and our times more beneficial to use it for the block system, it's easy to remember. In the negative side are tired, boring, feel rushed, and hard to remember.

In citra's opinion, block system is easy to remember cause it's done routinely because the system blocks done routinely for a week so that we easily remember it when you're the course of the system blocks for example make a technique, we have to understand the steps of the beginning of what to work to produce a product. But in bambang's opinion, block system is easy to forget cause we don't apply the science is in everyday life, for example when we are off a long time to practice the block so it's just solid with a theory well in there, we most forget the steps to make a technique or others who had taught.

A variety of an impact in block system

Politeknik STTT Bandung is one of institude which is under the ministry of industry. There are some course in Politeknik STTT, thats textile engineering, textile chemestry, fashion and textile merchendizing. Thats of its course apply block system, the course are fashion and textile meechendizing. 

What is block system? When will it be told? So, blcok system is a practical program which take 5 hours/day. This system will be told 2nd semestee starts from the basic first. Then at semester 3 continued and start make a lot off product such as pattren, laboratorium suit, and creative bags. 

At semestee 3,students has teached about running production. It men they need to work as a team with one supervisor 

Basicly, this practice system is very easy to be remembered because basically the block easy remember because of the system is a lab carried out every day with time 5 until 6 hours day. So we can be implemented science learned for the system blocks when we’ll get the task of because each day met and every day to get new things in the system. In a lab we have only 14 time meeting in every day. Then in a few months of the system blocks can already finished.

The system is also easy forgotten because the block system implemented every day for 14 times the meeting and if it is 14 times the meeting or activity ore do already finished then block system was considered finished.If the block system was wrong then science learned in the block system will easily forgotten because yo will need it in indrustial work plasec. So, its all of the variety off the impact of block system.

"TWO SIDES BETWEEN BLOCK SYSTEM"

In my opinion block system is a learning system that accelerating the schedule of practicum from the schedule that supposed to be ,in Polytechnic STTT this system only applies in fashion and textile merchandising ,why only fashion and textile merchandising major use this system ? because matery and process in fashion and textile merchandising  is not difficult as the other major. For me as a student in fashion and textile merchandising major this system have  disavantages and advantages.

 The disadvantages are, first like bambang's said it is easy to forget the matery ,i think because after finished the first matery to second matery , the matery is not synchron with one other , so the student will focus to matery that being studied and forget the matery before. Second , student difficult to understand the matery because student too tired and the decrease students' concentration ,so the matery that given is not accepted by the student and the learning process is not condusive. The last if the block system have done , the student is too lazy go to the college because percentage of attendance in block system must be 100%  while the class of theory must be 70%.

The advantages of this system are , First with study over 4 hours per day it make us accustomed and will not be shocked when we work in the real industry because it will be like that even more busy . Second , It easy to remember the lesson because we practice and do it everyday in 14 days . Third , We became closer with the lectures because we always communicate and ask something we don't know when we do this system . The last ,there is a motivation to go to the college because  percentage of attendance of this system must be 100%

The Impact of Block System

You are still confused what is a system block in the lecture?

I think block system is a daily practice schedule for each group. Block System implement teaching practices during the schedule from Monday to Friday for 14 days of meetings, the blocks system meeting also becoming more intensive and long enough, that 5-6 hours for each day. Block System is divided into two variations of one student takes practice and learning in the morning or afternoon with a predetermined schedule for a semester.

What are the negative impacts and positive of this block system?

In my opinion this block system initially very burdensome student, as required to be completed practice in a specified time is approximately one or two months to complete the lecture lesson. We are also required to practice every day for 14 days with an estimated time of 5-6 hours in the lab (work shop), with a very short time to get a satisfactory value we must show our ability as good as possible. Block System makes us tired because of work continuously, and can make us become saturated with the situation because we are also doing the same for each day during practice the blocks system progress. I think there is a negative impact on the block system that is quickly forgotten into students with practice they do once this block is finished as well, because after they finish this block they not apply and practice again. But on the other hand, the block system also has a positive impact on students is, we can be more focused to explore the science and practice that we get. Block System also enables us to complete in a short time and quickly done. But the system is still impressed blocks easy remember and easy forgotten because of these things.

The fun of learning by using block system in college

using block system is one way to simplify students for mastering a course in university. the concept is to join the different topic but have similar activity, in my case for example sewing , all topics that need sewing activity that need about one month to do when it's in normal way, bundled to become one week activity. and then the theories about sewing will be discuss on a week after that. however , for me it is not as simple as how it seems. even though i could say it could be easier to memorize what has learnt, but it could be easier to forget too. because all what we had practised in a week could vanish by a week theory that we learnt after that. "easy to memorize, but also easy to forget". moreover all course that using this system is mostly a practical course like manual pattern, sewing technique, garment production planning, and garment machine.

What is a block system?

The block system is a restructuring of the daily schedule to create a unit of the time for each class. The block system creates a learning or a meeting every day, met for a long time. Conventionally, there are fourteen to sixteen learnings or 5-6 hours meeting every day. There are many variations of block system that every college introduces, one of them is the student takes two learnings in the morning or afternoon with a new schedule that has been determined by the student for one semester. The block systems are usually held every Monday through Friday as Saturday and Sunday are off.

What are the positive impacts and the negative impacts of the block system?

Actually, the block system is a little bit heavier and more exhausting. The problem is we are required to complete the course materials in two months and to get the value and the capability as good as possible. But on the other hand, the block system also has positive impact for the student. We can focus on exploring the knowledge per course. We can also complete it fast and in the short time. But, the block system is impressed quick to be remember and quick to be forgotten.

In fact, with the system block it’s a little bit heavy and feels more tiring, the problem in two months we are required to complete the material from college, and in a short time to get the value and capabilities as good as possible. But the other hand, the blocks also have a positive impacts for students, we can also better focus on exploring the science of a lecture, we can also take care of it in a short time and get it over with. But the block seemed to quickly and quickly forget.
